Kosovo issues stamps for record-setting mountaineers

Post of Kosovo has released two commemorative stamps honouring mountaineers Uta Ibrahimi and Mrika Nikqi, celebrating their record-breaking ascents and their role in elevating the country’s global profile.

The Post of Kosovo has issued a new set of commemorative postage stamps celebrating two of the country’s most prominent mountaineers, Uta Ibrahimi and Mrika Nikqi, in a tribute to Kosovo’s growing presence in high-altitude climbing.

The philatelic release, titled “Alpinists of Kosovo – Uta Ibrahimi and Mrika Nikqi,” highlights the achievements of the two climbers, whose ascents of the world’s highest peaks have drawn international attention and national pride in the young Balkan state.

Ibrahimi is recognised as the first woman from the Balkans to summit all 14 of the world’s mountains above 8,000 metres — a feat regarded as one of mountaineering’s most demanding challenges. Nikqi, meanwhile, has emerged as one of Kosovo’s youngest elite climbers, gaining recognition for scaling several of the world’s highest peaks, including Mount Everest.

In a statement accompanying the release, the postal service said the stamps honour “the courage, dedication and vision” of the two athletes, adding that their accomplishments have “placed Kosovo on the global mountaineering map.”

Kosovo, which declared independence in 2008, has increasingly sought to promote its cultural and sporting achievements internationally. The latest stamp issue reflects a broader effort to highlight national role models, particularly women, whose successes challenge traditional expectations and inspire younger generations.

The stamps are now in circulation and available for collectors and the general public.
